100 OF THE WORLD'S TOP HEALTH AI BRAINS WILL SPEAK

BAKUL PATEL

Associate Centre Director for Digital Health

FDA

BAKUL PATEL

Associate Centre Director for Digital Health

FDA

With AI being a system that continuously learns, the FDA will find it hard to approve AI based devices, as currently, approvals are for products and devices exactly as they are – not for something which changes.

Bakul Patel has recently launched a pilot program, “FDA Pre-Cert,” which could eventually allow agency officials to focus their inspections on “the software developer or digital-health technology developer, rather than primarily at the product.’’

We are evolving that space,” he says. “The legacy model is the one we know works. But the model that works continuously—we don’t yet have something to validate that. So the question is [as much] scientific as regulatory: How do you reconcile real-time learning [with] people having the same level of trust and confidence they had yesterday?” This is the question he will try to answer with an FDA update at the summit.

He is the Director of Big Data Analytics & Data Science of São João Hospital Center (CHSJ), the #1 public hospital center in Portugal (1100 beds, 5600 employees, 350 million euro budget/year).

He has envisioned and implemented a revolutionary ‘ Big Data & Analytics Platform’ named ‘HVITAL’ that analyses 300 million patient records/day that automatically identifies and promptly alert to patients at risk in critical areas such as: clinical deterioration risk, infection control and antibiotic stewardship. This automated system is able to help anticipating 30% of the Intensive Care Units (ICU) entries up to 7 days before they occur, representing more than 1 million euros/year in savings. This platform works 24/7, independently from any physiological stressor or human bias, correlating more than 560 billion data points to find actionable insights and patterns that help doctors to better treat patients.

From 2012 to 2016 HVITAL platform has also helped to reduce the infection rate of this hospital in 31%, representing more than 10 million euros in cost-savings. This Big Data Platform is by far the most advanced in Europe and makes it one of the most advanced solutions in the World regarding the practice of Data Driven Medicine inside Hospitals.
